Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
I was helping my daughter with her math homework recently: and quite frankly, we both got tripped up on the order of operations. Luckily, we were able to revert back to the helpful phrase – Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally which ever so politely reminds us to do parenthesis first, followed by exponents, multiplication, division, addition and finally subtraction. So that got me to thinking - Is there an order of operations for Christ followers and could this presumed order of operations be something that diverts non-believers from making a commitment to follow Him? In mathematics, there is really no way to deflect from the Aunt Sally phrase and get the correct answer, but why is it that so many believers feel that they have to have an order to their fellowship with God? The truth is they don’t. God doesn’t care if we are sitting, standing, kneeling, humming, singing. He just wants our attention on Him and Him alone. He doesn’t care if we can quote scripture or how many (if any) bible verses we can recall from memory. He just wants us to be in His Word daily so that we can get to know His character and be more like Him. He doesn’t care if we bring addictions to His door as long as we knock. One of the best things about the God we serve is that He accepts us where we are, knows the order that got us here, and loves us anyway.
